Tepees, 47-H: Type 3

1954-1958

The Type 3 tepee shakers are defined by the red Sapulpa clay. They share the same plug depression base and stubby pole tops as the Type 2 shakers. None of the red clay teepees has a factory base mark. Although teepees on red clay are the most recent group they are very difficult to find especially in the less common glazes. By the late fifties the West was won and import potteries were again pushing the domestic producers out of business.  The teepee shakers were no longer demand items.

When the American rutile glazes adorned the brick red clay of this era outstanding coloration resulted.  This issue should be available in the the rutile glazes prairie green, desert gold, and brown satin, as well as white sand, onyx black, turquoise, clay blue, terra cotta rose, sorghum brown, and sunflower yellow. Also I understand that Frankoma used the rare glaze buckskin tan on some teepee shakers in 1954. So far I have had only limited luck finding all of these.

Frankoma used this mold as part of the 1957 semi-centennial celebration production prolonging its usefulness.   I will review those sets in the advertising and commerative section.
